One of the most common misconceptions is that people cannot negotiate their salaries with the prospective employers or even when they get a promotion. While everyone wants to negotiate their salary, only a few people actually do. Usually, this is because of the fear of giving a negative impression and being refused.
If you will never ask, you will never know. So, don’t wait around and let the corporations take advantage of you. Getting your worth is your right and here’s how you can do it smartly.
Do your homework
It is essential that you know your value before you make an attempt to negotiate your salary. Do some research. You can visit websites like glassdoor.com to come up with an estimate of salaries for employees like yourself. Don’t forget to take into account the years of experience, type of industry, education, and skills while doing your research. You can also ask people about their salaries in your networking circle who have jobs similar to yours. Moreover, you can talk to recruiters of other companies and figure out what they are willing to pay you. It will provide you with a range of salary that you are worth getting.
It is vital that you know the exact number that you want to target. Then, you must ask for more than that. Negotiation with the employers will automatically result in a final offer that is lower than that. This will give you an edge over the hiring managers when you walk in for negotiations as otherwise, they will just find ways to turn down your request.
Make sure that you are on the right track
You need to ask yourself some tough questions before you think about negotiating your salary. Have I added value to the organization? Have I exceeded expectations? Is the timing right? Have I proved myself? Are my team-members and employers satisfied with my work?
If the answer to all these questions is yes, then go ahead. If not, then think again.
Prepare to succeed
Make a draft that highlights all your positive characteristics. List any achievements, awards, and good recommendations that you have received in the past. You must demonstrate that you standout and hence deserve a higher salary than what is being offered to you. You need to market yourself properly.
Don’t forget to practice your pitch again and again unless it is perfect. You need to emphasize on the future rather than the past. Remain confident and don’t be desperate.
It is in your own interest to learn to negotiate. It doesn’t matter what is your gender, what is your age, whether it is your first job or seventh, and how many years you have worked for a particular company. The worst that can happen is that your pay will be the same as it is now. So, take the leap of faith and negotiate.
