On daily basis, students ask me about which university they should join for MBA degree. Interestingly, many students join universities because of either low fee or proximity. You don’t do MBA because it is virtuous. It is all about investment of time and money so that you can reap return on your investment later on. Most of the universities are factories of MBA degrees; their graduates face immense challenges later on in the job market.
Whenever you or any of your relatives or friends are going through process of choosing a university, keep the following points in mind.
- What is repute of university for academic excellence? Is it esteemed or just another degree selling organization?
- What is the depth of its link with industry? Do they invite guest speakers and regularly conduct seminars where industry leaders come and deliver experiences?
- Do they have strong placement office? Can they arrange summer internships or students have to find their internships themselves?
- What is the scholastic depth of faculty?
- Is there special emphasis on discipline or it is a place of waywardness?
- Have all graduates of previous class got job or still rotting in the market? Just get hold of previous batch’s graduate directory and call your seniors. They will tell the story.
- Always go for big names like IBA or LUMS. You get unfair advantage of being a graduate of big brand.
- Degrees of foreign universities (except of big names) are totally worthless. Employers prefer graduates of local renowned names like IBA and LUMS to foreign university graduates unless you have attended Ivy Leagues.
- Does university put emphasis on rigorous entry tests and interviews or is it more concerned with selling the seat?
