The world is evolving and so is the process of job hunting. You may get surprised by the number of job hunt rules that you thought were absolutely necessary to follow and risky to break, but are in fact now termed as traditional and breakable.

Following are the rules that you don’t have to follow anymore:
- The rule that points out that you cannot contact your hiring manager.
You can always contact your potential hiring managers to ask for advice and for feedback. There is nothing wrong with it and it won’t adversely affect your chances of getting the job. In fact, it will show that you are genuinely interested in the job.
- The rule that your resume must follow a certain pattern and particular keywords.
Your resume should be unique and must tell your own story. Following the conventional format, will not help you stand out and using clichés will do you no good.
- The rule that points out that you cannot use pronouns such as ‘I’.
Yes, you can refer to yourself in your resume and even in your LinkedIn account. Gone are the days when it was frowned upon.
- The rule that highlights that you can only apply for a job through the respective company’s own portal only or that the application submitted on the company’s portal will be given preference.
Nowadays, you can apply through several portals and websites for a job and all applications are given equal priority.
- The rule that says that your salary will only be slightly higher than your previous salary.
That’s not the case any longer. Your salary depends on the job you have applied for and what you bring to the table. There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to the salary.
- The rule that says that you must wait for as long as it takes to hear back from the company you applied at.
You can take the initiative and contact the company you applied at if you have any questions or if you haven’t heard back in a long time.
- The rule that you must only answer questions posed to you in the job interview.
Don’t act like a robot in the job interview. Be enthusiastic and proactive. Ask questions if you have any.
- The rule that you must do whatever you are asked to do by the hiring managers. Remember that some questions posed to you are maybe trick questions, which are designed only to judge your personality and attitude. So, act according to your own morals and ethics. Don’t fall into the trap of pleasing the interviewers.
- The rule that that the ball is in the court of the recruiters and they have some power over you.You are a person, not a puppet and so you must not act like one. You can lead the interview forward on occasions by adding something to the points made by the recruiters or asking some details of for instance the company culture.
- The rule that you cannot negotiate your salary or benefits package.
Once you are offered the job, you can professionally ask whether there is room for slight adjustments in the salary that you are offered or not. You can also get your benefits package tailored to a certain extent.
